Talent Management in the IT Industry – A Competitive Edge

Talent management is a strategic approach focused on attracting, developing, motivating, and retaining skilled employees to meet an organization’s current and future goals. In “Effective talent management: Aligning strategy, Peoples and Performance” by Mark Wilcox(2016), he elaborates the role of alignment between business strategy and talent practices, defining talent management as creating and executing policies to attract, retain, and utilize skilled employees to achieve competitive advantage.

The IT industry is subject to rapid growth due to technological advancements. Therefore, managing the talent is one of the most important factors that drive an IT organization in the competitive industry. This dynamic landscape necessitates robust talent management to attract, develop and retain high-performing employees.

An effective talent management system can significantly contribute to an IT organization’s competitive advantage in the following ways:

Attracting top talent

The first step of talent management is to attract the most suitable people to an organization. The employees hired should be compatible with the job requirements and the culture of the organization. In the IT industry, updated knowledge on new technology tools is a necessity, which has lead a race between organization in hiring talented individuals to their organization so they have a competitive advantage over their rival entities. The “War of talent”(2001) refers to the increasingly fierce competition to attract and retain employees.

Retaining key talent

Retaining the key talent is one of the most important aspects. If an IT organization is unable to retain the high-performing staff, it may not be able to archive the competitive advantage or, in the worst case, the organization may lose the business to a rival organization as they may attract the customers of the Company with their talented employees.

Developing the employees

Since the IT industry evolves rapidly, it is important to have a learning culture to keep the skills and knowledge of the employees up-to-date. The development of employees involves training, mentoring, coaching in performing an effective job and improving their skills in line with market trends such as AI, new software tools and process automation.

If the employees are not updated with the new technology, it may have a negative impact on the organization, as the customers always want to experience new technology rather than using outdated technology.

Driving innovation and productivity

As the IT industry rapidly evolves, to survive in the industry a Company shall either innovate outstanding products that a rival organization cannot produce or keep developing their existing products to attract customers. To archive this, an organization requires to retain experienced, high-performing staff and keep recruiting people with innovative ideas and talents so the knowledge will flow to the rest of the staff.

Building a high-performance culture

This can archive by developing strong leaders who can inspire and motivate employees, cultivate culture of excellence, people who has innovative ideas and customer focus and measuring and improving employee engagement. Overall. By having effective talent management, an IT company can gain a significant competitive advantage over its rivals. This cannot be achieved by just attracting and retaining talented employees; it is also required to develop them continuously, drive them through innovation and productivity and build a high-performing culture.
